Minecraft uses a level system where each level costs more XP than the last. Level 30 costs a total of 1,395 XP points, and higher levels grow quadratically. XP is earned from killing mobs, mining ore, smelting, breeding and trading — and is spent mainly on enchanting and mending.
Level 30 is the magic number for enchanting because the best enchantments unlock at that level. To reach it from 0 you need 1,395 XP — about 279 zombie kills, or 199 bottles o' enchanting, or 1,395 smelted items. This calculator does that math for any level range.
Level 30 requires a cumulative total of 1,395 XP points. Reaching it from level 0 needs that full 1,395, and every level after 31 costs even more.
The fastest reliable sources are mob farms (zombies, skeletons, creepers give 5 XP each), the End's Ender Dragon, and trading with villagers. A simple zombie farm gets you to level 30 in a few minutes.
Yes. The XP curve grows roughly quadratically — from level 0 to 16 each level needs about 2n+7 XP, and beyond level 31 the cost rises steeply. That is why most players stop at 30 for enchanting.
