Every anvil use adds a cost in XP levels: repair cost plus enchantment cost plus a prior work penalty that doubles each time an item is used. Above level 39 the anvil refuses — the dreaded "Too Expensive!" — which is why planning repairs and enchantments together matters.
Combining books in the right order (matching enchantments first, high levels last) and repairing before enchanting saves levels. This calculator reproduces the vanilla cost formula so you never waste diamonds on a bricked item.

Each time an item is used on an anvil, its penalty doubles (1, 2, 4, 8…). Every enchantment and repair adds the penalty to the cost, which is why repeatedly reworking items gets expensive fast.
Yes — combining a tool with the matching material (e.g. diamond with diamond) repairs it for 25% of its durability plus the enchantment cost. This calculator models standard repairs.
