Render scale renders the game at a fraction of your display resolution and upscales the result. DLSS and FSR quality modes work this way: Quality ≈ 66%, Balanced ≈ 58%, Performance ≈ 50% of pixels. This calculator shows exactly what that means in pixels.
GPU load scales roughly with total pixels. Going from 1080p to 1440p adds about 78% more pixels, and to 4K about 4× the pixels of 1080p. Knowing the exact numbers helps you predict FPS when switching resolutions.
1080p is about 2.07 million pixels; 1440p is about 3.69 million — roughly 78% more. 4K is about 8.29 million, about 4× 1080p.

Modern upscalers keep quality close to native at Quality/Balanced modes. Performance mode (50%) shows softer detail but gives a large FPS boost.
